Senseless Statistical Shenanigans from Sid Scoop
Record
There was a new
record for 2005 when the fastest slowest time was
recorded eclipsing the 26.13 set by Chris Parkinson on
26 July. Five members went sub 23mins and club
statistician Sizzler Siddons was asked if this was a new
club record. “I’ve no idea” he retorted.
Graham scored
his 3rd win of the series, but his one second
victory is controversial to say the least as the
official stopwatches had gone awol. The word to describe
Big Ian’s ride only 2 days after his 12 hours epic has
not been invented yet but even Sizzler conceded “I
couldn’t have done that.”
Compact Disc
Four months
after smashing his face on the front end of a BMW, Jack
set a sensational new pb which brought a big smile to
his face. A smile that will look much better when
complemented by some teeth I might add.
For the first
time since 28 June, Levi went slower than his previous
performance while John H improved his pb for a
staggering 4th week in succession. Nice to
see Fred back in action but I fear the scars of going
slower than 25mins may take longer to heal than his
face.
Cassette
In the Handicap
League, a tense finale is assured as Steve narrowed the
gap to a mere point as the dynamic duo both soared
through the magical 100 points barrier. I wouldn’t want
to be the handicapper for this one! Alex Wallis’ faint
hopes of overall victory were scuppered, but with 4
weeks to go to the GHS Final he said, “I’ve got bigger
fish to fry than John “the Hake” Hadley and Steve “the
Cod” Cowlbeck.
Sprockets
Jack’s
outstanding new pb saw him collect maximum points just
3secs ahead of John who earlier announced that if he
didn’t go sub 26mins in such float conditions, he would
“go home and kick the cat.” Confidence in the Davies
house was at such a low ebb that RSPCA Inspectors were
there as a precaution.
With one race
remaining, there is one question to be answered, has
life ever been as exciting in the Donny Wheelers and can
it possibly ever be as exciting again?

Super Statistics from Sid Scoop
Last week
Sizzler completed 226.16mls in the National 12 Hours
Championship and was only 4.48mls short of making the
winning team, but by how much did he need to improve to
grab that vital 3rd place in the dream team?
Assuming he rode
an average gear of 48 x 15, he would travel 7.536 yards
per pedal revolution or 1 mile per 233.546 revs.
Therefore, to cover a distance of 226.16mls would
require 52,818.763 revolutions of the said gear ratio.
If you consider the duration of the event being 720
minutes, that equates to an average of 73.359 revs per
minute.
To achieve a
distance of 230.64mls, Sizzler would have to increase
the number of pedal revolutions by 1046.286 which
equates to an additional 1.453 revs per minute. “That
sounds easy” remarked Sizzler.
Next month, I’ll
explain what Dave Furniss has to do to beat Hucky’s club
12hour record on a gear of 53 x 11.
National
12 Hours Championship – 14 August
As the band
played “In the mood,” our 7 superhero’s lined up for
their day with destiny. API were the overwhelming
favourites for the team title, led by the best tester
outside of Doncaster, but with Sizzler assigned to mark
him out of the game, there was a quiet confidence in the
camp that the biggest upset since Bob Burleigh finished
2nd to Alex Wallis in a Mike Tyson lookalike
contest was imminent.
Back
to the Future
As the clock
struck 10, we were down to five men. Paul’s knee
inexplicably disintegrated for the 2nd
successive year and after last years experience it was a
wise decision to stop. Hucky was passed by more riders
in the first 40miles than he has been in a lifetime and
when Lynne Taylor passed him, that was the final straw.
Can you imagine on Back to the Future VI, going back to
1975 and telling Mac and Ticker that Hucky got passed by
a woman? It’s too outrageous to be fictional.
At around 11am,
the wind was blowing at 8 on the Richter Scale as some
riders were already showing signs of wear and tear. On
to the Green Tree circuit and our progress was
momentarily halted as Mojo had a rear wheel puncture and
Martin’s saddle came loose. Through 100miles and the Fab
5 were now entering the zone which sorts the men from
the men. Martin blasted through in 4.26.34, Big Ian
powered past in 4.29.58, Mojo cruised by in 4.47.11,
Sizzler was sizzling with 5.07.26 and Dave deserved a
medal for just being there after 5.19.14.
True
Lies
Rumours were
circulating that the API team were down to 2. As the
southern wusses wilted in the wind, we just had to keep
doing what we were doing. As the fat lady started
clearing her throat with 3 hours remaining, Mojo began
to suffer a reoccurrence of tendonitis in his right
knee. Fortunately Jenny Blizard lives 1/4 mile from the
finishing circuit and so I had to finish doing the
ironing while her magic hands provided temporary relief.
It’s not all glamour being part of the support crew!
As the fat lady
grabbed the microphone, it was time to celebrate a
magnificent achievement. Martin finished in a fabulous 4th
with a tremendous 261.70mls while Big Ian was a superb 6th
with a fantastic 257.81mls. Both won individual gold
medals in their respective veterans category and Big Ian
also won the1st Handicap award. Mojo
completed the winning team with a brilliant 230.64mls
which included at least 2 hours soft pedalling. 30 years
after last winning the title, the Donny boys were back.
Sizzler produced an awesome 226.16mls and Dave Furniss
somehow managed an astounding 216.42mls. Both could have
been in the winning team which is testimony to the hard
effort put in by everyone to make this such a memorable
day in the club’s history.
Charlie’s
Angels
Many many
congratulations to all the riders, you deserve every bit
of praise for your endeavours. Thanks also to the
support teams, the feed station team led by Matto which
contained enough talent to win this title and marshall’s
Don Silverwood and Chris and Alex Wallis. Finally a
special mention for Maureen Beaumont who was an official
timekeeper for the event.
It was great to
recognise so many “old” faces out supporting the club
including Allan Robson who was 2nd counter in
the 1975 winning team, Bob Waddington, Bud Kendall, Tony
and Barbara Smith and John Beaumont
Back
to the Future II
The final word
though must go to future superstar Alex “I’m a ginner
I’m a winner”
Wallis who said,
“if you think that was great team performance, just wait
until the GHS Final.” Gosh you have to be tough to
survive in this town!
Spare a thought
though for Sizzler who missed out on a team medal by a
measly 4.48 miles. I think it’s only fair that we give
him the opportunity to win a National medal by taking on
those lovely ladies from Walsall and deny them a
hat-trick of wins in the 24hour. What do you say
lads? Lads……….. is
anybody there?
Ask
Alex
Dear Alex,
Please can you provide me with a
training schedule as I would like to beat Kevin Dawson
in a 12hour next year. I am 68 years old and did a pb
for 10miles this year. I can train every day except
Thursday when I have to collect my pension.
Bob Burleigh
Planet Y
Alex replies,
I’m sorry Bob, but the training
schedule designed to beat Kevin in a 12hour hasn’t been
invented yet. However, as I am peaking for the GHS Final
in a couple of weeks, I could help you achieve your
lifelong ambition of a 21minute 10. I’m taking John
Tanner out for a quickie on Friday morning and could fit
you in straight after.
Open
25miles tt 18 September
Entries to
Sizzler by Tuesday 6 September. Entry fee is £6.00 and
£12.00 for tandems. The course is the 025/13 which
utilises the same circuit around Hatfield Woodhouse and
Belton as used in the National 12hour. That will bring
back some happy, I mean painful memories. If you are not
riding, please volunteer your services for marshalling,
but we really want to see those entries!
