Boggled at Boggle Hole
16 members made the trip alltogether, 13 rode up with Don Saunderson going as far as Fridaythorpe then returning home and 4 came up in cars and Martins van with the luggage, gone are the days when we carried our own gear.
We set off at 9:15am from Don Valley Cycles on a fine morning all in good spirit making for are first stop at Fridaythorpe with a light northeasterley wind.
Because it was so nice our leader decided that we make a slight detour and go to Fridaythorpe via Numburnholme and Hugget just to make shure that the group would be ready for dinner when we arrived. But they still had the energy to sprint the last 2miles into Fridaythorpe, set off by Kevin (chipo) Avery.
After nearly one hour in the cafe we made for Sledmere where the drags began and our route went slightly wrong and we finished up in Foxholes, whowever our route finder soon got the group back on track and into the first rain of the day. It persisted down.
We made for Stainton then up though Troutdale, where the real climbing began, but the rain eased and on to Hackness and up the lung busting Hackness hill to Silpho with John Maughan and Micheal Hope showing the way and the old gits bringing up the rear.
On to Harwood Dale in glorious sunshine and down the steep hill to Bogge Hole Youth Hostel arriving at at 5pm. A quick shower and down for dinner then out for the night to Robin Hoods Bay with a steady walk over the cliff tops, it seemed a lot longer coming back.
After a good nights sleep and breakfast we set off for home, this time Jenny Blizzard and Martin Maltby joined us. We went back to Hackness and through Dalby Forest (very hilly) and onto Thornton dale then to Malton and dinner at Stamford Bridge where a new cafe has opened(verygood).
Back on the flat lands with the pace increasing to Seaton Ross and Boothferry Bridge where the pace increased further instigated by Steve Maltby who could smell his tea. With the weather remaining fine all day every one arrived home safely but in the main a little tired after a brilliant weekend. Just a thought for Jenny, Michael and Andrew who hand to continue home to Wickersley.

Sad Loss
On August 5th the Wheelers lost one of its longest serving and still active members, Alan Reeves. Alan fought a very brave battle against cancer of the jaw. He was well known by a lot of the older membership and will be greatly missed. He was 80 years of age when he died, and leaves his wife Iris. I had a very nice letter from his niece after he died thanking the Wheelers for giving her uncle so much pleasure. Our sympathies go out to his wife Iris and their relations from all of us at the Wheelers.
On the Right Track
People have been asking if we are to repeat our usual pilgrimage to Manchester Velodrome? Well the answer is maybe…No booking has been made yet, so keep your eyes peeled and read the next newsletter for more information. The last few visits have been very well received and well attended.
Come and get it!!!
The latest shipment of the new design club clothing has now arrived. The first shipment has almost sold out and popular items went very quickly so if you require any items please contact Don Valley Cycles and make them aware of your wants and needs!
Records are Falling
New club records have been established this season. Graham Rushworth has so far claimed the 10, 25 and 30 records. All these have yet to be ratified by the club racing secretary. Well done Graham on a fine string of successes. We cannot forget our younger members, and we wish them well in their attempt on the team award in the national GHS 10 final in September. They have been going very well so far in the evening 10 series so they should be able to hold their own with the rest and put up a good performance.
There have been some notable performances by other riders though with Andy Briggs getting a medal in the National 24Hr championship. A very creditable ride and all congratulations to him for the fine effort in a national event. Many thanks also go to his helpers, keeping him cheery and supplied with food etc all through the long hours.
On the distance riding front again, we had two riders finish the local North Midlands 12hr event. Andy Briggs getting a well deserved second place and Trevor 'Top Cat' Siddons getting a very well deserved finish as it turned out to be a very hot and windy day. All those who finished and even attempted to finish deserved a medal that day.
Not forgetting road racing though as Mark Wordsworth has been stringing some fine performances together in some very high class road races over the summer. Not to be out done Chris Green, Adam Weaver, Jack Ibbottson, Steve Maltby and Martin Wheeldon have all been placed highly in various road races. Martin finished second overall in the North Mids Road Race league.
A New Era on the Horizon
This Club letter will be my last as your editor, treasurer, club secretary and web site administrator. The pressure of University has now led to the pressure of getting back into full time employment…arghhhhhhh!!!! So the time has now come to pass over the reins to people with a little more time and who can take the club forward into the next stage. When I took on this role eight years ago we had 35 members, with a third of those being life membership. Today we have 113 members and with a new younger element evolving, a new era of the wheelers is on the horizon.
Russ Toft has offered to take over web site administration\designand and production of the quarterly newsletters. Trevor Siddons has agreed to take over the other membership roles until the AGM when the role of Club Secretary can be discussed and voted on. So any news, views and results etc. should be passed on to Russell Toft at info@doncasterwheelers.org.uk and any membership fees or enquiries should be passed onto Trevor Siddons, 36 School Lane, Auckley, Doncaster.
