Guess Who’s Back in Town?
Sad News
This
newsletter opens with some sad news of the death of a long
time life member Peter Riley, at the age of 72. Most of the
newer members will not have known Peter but those of the
older ones will have met him. Peter unfortunately had a
cycling accident in the early eighties which left him
totally blind. However this did not stop him cycling for the
next few years after he had recovered from his terrible
injuries as he was to be seen out on a tandem still enjoying
life on two wheels. Our deepest sympathies go out to his
family and friends.
Good News
It has come
to my ears that ‘El President’ Bob Waddington, has been
having internal modifications to pipe work, and supplemental
infusions to aid performance in what rumours say is an
intended comeback to testing! I am sorry Bob but isn’t this
against the principles of a fair sport these days? Lets keep
it natural!
On the
serious side of this banter, Bob is on the recovery stage
from a spate of ill health and we wish him well. Get well
soon, you never know that comeback may yet happen!
A Warm Welcome
2003 sees yet
more members joining our merry band by crossing our palm’s
with silver. Welcome to the following newcomers: Rebecca
Dawson, Zoe Cooper, Mark Wordsworth, Andy and Helen Briggs,
Graham Bell, Michael Hope, Adam Weaver and Colin Aldus. May
your stay be long and fruitful.
A Long Distance Request
I recently
had an email request from Andy Briggs our long distance
specialist:
Dale, I was
going to ride the national 24 on 26th & 27th July and
wondered whether
(a) Anyone
fancied making a team of 3 up. These days you only need
about 1300 miles for a medal!!
(b) If anyone
fancied an expenses paid trip to help support (inc over
night stop if needed). It would involve handing bottles up,
changing tubs and getting progress info from the HQ.
(c) I could
borrow any member’s rechargeable smart battery for the week
end
Thanks
Andy Briggs

If you can
help at all, please contact Andy on the number above.
Youthful Fun
February saw about 20 club members taking to the roads of
North Yorkshire, eventually ending up at Osmotherley Youth
Hostel. The weekend went very well with fine weather, long
miles and good company. This yearly event is proving more
popular each time it is run. Many thanks to Martin Maltby
who organised the trip. Keep your ears open for any future
trips that may be planned.
Away the Lads!
On the subject of trips away, the yearly raiding party to
pillage and plunder the various hostels of Majorca took
place in April with Trevor ‘sizzler’ Siddons at the helm.
Tem merry (or that’s how they returned to our shores!) took
part in what is turning out to be a regular yearly
social/training event. Many long hours were spent on the
saddle (it was strapped to a bar stool!). About 450 miles
were covered in the week. It would have been more but
sticking to strict training guidelines considering
sufficient hydration, the group tended to spend most of
their time stopping to take care of this element of the day
(or should that be night!). Reports are that all enjoyed the
trip thoroughly and will return again next year when the
ravages of the winter weather have worn away all the
wanted/banned posters from the bar doors of Majorca.
Racing Begins Again
Racing has once again started with a few members braving the
elements to start the season. Good efforts have been seen by
Chris Green, Colin Hinds, Ron Moat, Martin Maltby and Pete
Hurst to name just a few.
Congratulations must however go out to Adam Weaver who
records the first road race win by a Wheeler this year.
Remember its teamwork, support each other at events.
Tuesday Frolics
Club 10’s have started again on a Tuesday Evening on the
Hatfield Woodhouse to Blaxton course. These events start at
7:00pm and cost 50p entry. So come along and have a go. They
can be treated in three ways:
1) Race to win
2) Intense training efforts
3) A social outing (My own personal times tend to reflect
this stage!)
Which ever way suits you, come and try them. Support your
local 10’.
Club Championship 25
On a cool and breezy morning four intrepid revelers started
our own championship 25’ (incorporated in the NMCF Pooled
Clubs 25’). Coming out on top was Andy Briggs,
congratulations. The full result was as follows:
1. Andy Briggs 59:04 (Not including café
stop)
2. Martin Maltby 1:01:47
3. Chris Wallis 1:03:04
4. Trevor Siddons 1:07:36 (Including café stop)
Please remember that the next Club Championship is the 50’
held in conjunction with the NMCF 50 on Sat 5th July (See
CTT Handbook or Trev Siddons for details).
Sex, Sex, Sex!
Now I have your undivided attention please note that if you
have not paid your subs for this year this will be the last
newsletter that you will receive. If you are one of these
people and it has been just a hiccup in the little grey
cells then you can send it direct to me at the address at
the end or drop it in to Don Valley Cycles, when you’re next
in town. Couldn’t be simpler. Please remember cheques made
payable to ‘Doncaster
Wheelers’
please, and a receipt will only be sent on request.
Your Help is Required
Tis the season to come forward and offer copious amounts of
help. Your subs enable you to have the privilege of
supporting your very own club when it promotes events. Think
of it as a benefit of membership as we don’t generally ask
non members to provide this service. In other words, its
payback time!
Evening 10’s
Extra help is required to help marshal the turn at Blaxton.
Its only 20-30mins work each Tuesday evening. We currently
have Bud Kendal (Thanks Bud), but it would be nice to give
him some extra support. Nothing technical is required, just
an ability to stand at a roundabout, point the right
direction to riders, and breath in as much carbon monoxide
as you want (that bit is free). Contact Trevor Siddons.
Sporting Course 16/32mile Time Trial (Sunday 15th July)
Any type of help is required from making tea to writing
results on the result board when they are phoned from the
finish (no training required). Riders who want to enter
would also be welcomed as this is included in the
description of ‘support’. We do not promote vast quantities
of open events these days so please offer your support where
you can. Contact Trevor Siddons.
Road Race – Pickburn Circuit (Wednesday 11th July evening)
Offers of help to marshal this popular circuit is required.
Benefits include a good vantage point, the possibility of
wearing a nice bright orange or green top, and stopping
traffic by waving a big red flag! Come along and watch the
best local riders tough it out on what is a demanding
circuit. If you feel fit enough why not enter and let’s have
some home riders to cheer for. Contact Martin Maltby.
Guess Who’s Back in Town?
Guess who got
back today?, That wild eyed boy, that’s been away, Hasn’t
changed, but got lots to say, Yes its Alan Mattinson! Back
from his chalet maid job for the winter. Welcome back Alan. |
