Welcome to Issue 25.

I Have Returned From Whence I Came…

Well, your worst nightmares have come true, The Editor is back, and back with a bumper issue. Before I ramble on, its thanks to Alan Mattinson for his help over the last year manfully keeping the newsletter afloat while I was otherwise engaged. Well now I’m back now and its straight down to business it’s an eyes down and full house and all that.

Rudy Project Sporting Course Regional Event

Another sucessful event by our eminent organiser Trevor Siddons. What more can we say. The event was troubled by roadworks on the original course, so a new one was devised, and what a course. It was reported to be likened to be similar to the one used for the Grand Prix des Nations in France! Now you can’t have better than that on our own doorstep. Th event ran without any major problems and was enjoyed by all those who entered. Riders came from far and wide to ride and there were many comments on the organisation (all good). Michael Hutchinson won the event in a leasurly 55min, but unfortunately for most this was well out of their reach. The weather kept fine, England won at football, what more could we have wanted, well a few more local riders would not have gone amiss. The Wheelers put up some good times while many of the other members helped out with other duties.

Cross Channel Swim Attempt….

News has arrived of a member starting to train to swim the channel. It’s our ever spriteful Dennis Clamp, who has apparently taken to leaping into any river he can get near, however all did not go well on one recent session and after slipping into the river, he broke three ribs, punctured a lung, had to be rescued and enjoyed the hospitality of the NHS for a while. The lead up to this information may not have been true but the injuries were, Ouch! He is apparently getting over his slip into the river and we wish him well. The moral of this story is, when near water, don’t slip in! (Thanks to our roving reporter Bob Waddington for the news).

We’ll Meet Again Don’t Know Where Don’t……

A little belated but many thanks to John Beaumant for organising the 75th Aniversary Nosh and Natter event at Barnby Dun. It was by all accounts a great success with old and new members having a good time, recounting stories of the past and present.  Here’s to the next 25 and what can we do for the 100th.

Ideas

While you while away the hours on the bike, have you ever thought, “Now that would be good for the Wheelers to do”. Well if you have, then let us know about it. If someone is willing to organise it, we may be able to help, you never know. There is one proviso to this though, yes there’s always the small print, you must be willing to organise or help organise it. We cannot keep relying upon the same people. Its your chance, its your club, make the most of it.

Some Old, Some New, Some Just Returned

Welcome to new members, Graham Briggs, Darren Cook, Russell Toft, Levi and Graham Huck, Maurice Hart, Vernon Maher, Alan Couldwell, Philip Cooper, Rob Newman, and Chris Morrey. A few new to cycling, a few not but new to the club and a couple who are not new to both. A welcome return to Alan, some may remember him from the 80’s. May all your stay be long and joyful.

Autumn Road Race Report

This event was a new one to the calendar for us, and thankfuly to all the hard work of Martin Maltby he pulled of a success.  The finish was a lone win for K Wright with a hectic bunch following on behind. Our own Cris Green taking the buch spint on the line. Many thanks to all the marshalls who stood out in the sun and rain to help. Those who did not, where were you. Remember we can only promote events if we have enough volunteers to help run and man the events. Its your Club, support it.

Attention again all Youth’s!

Martin Maltby is arranging a trip at Don Valley Cycles, for mid Nov/Dec, to Edwinstow Youth Hostel. It will be a possible off road trek there and back with your mountain bike. Contact Martin if you are interested, but make it quick as places are taken quickly.

The ‘nearly’ man finally does it….

The nearly man has finally achieved his target. After many years of trying he has done it.

It was nearly a club record 10      BUT      someone had already done a faster one!

It was nearly a club tandem record            BUT      the other rider wasn’t a member!

He nearly won our road race         BUT      someone else crossed there first!

He nearly won the DVCCA 2up       BUT      the event was cancelled!

He nearly won that evening road race          BUT      it rained!

Well he has finally done it and gained enough point for a first act road licence. Well done, yes you must have guessed it by now, Chris Green. Not to be outdone Steve Maltby is rising through the ranks with enough points to gain his third cat license. Another member heading for the stars is Graham Briggs, who as the season stands is only one point short of an elite cat license.

Club Room

The Club Room makes its appearance again on the first Tuesday evening of the month starting Tuesday October 1st.  Come along for a chat gossip or just to pay your dues in the New Year.

You will be very welcome on Tuesday 3rd December 2002, as it will be our AGM meeting. You chance to select the people to represent you, and to air your views etc. As I say time and time again, it’s your Club, please make the effort to have your say.

Majorca 2003

Anyone wanting to join the annual raiding party to Majorca (mid April, no dates as we went to press), to sample the delights of the Majorcan countryside, please contact Martin Maltby or Trevor Siddons at Don Valley Cycles. The recent raids have been well received and have proved to be a big success (Well they havn’t banned tham from going back yet anyway!)

The Xmas Bash and Prize Presentation

The venue will again be the Catholic Club, Doncaster, on Friday 13th December 2002. Last year was such a success that thinking caps are on as to what theme this years may take. Who knows………. More details when they are available, or if you cannot wait, contact Martin at Don Valley Cycles.

Many thanks go to Trevor Siddons whose tireless work kept this event alive through all sorts of adversities, hell and high water. This years event was a little different to previous years in that the 25miles was covered by completing two circuits. It was a solution to roadworks on the original course but was well received by most of the riders. The Wheelers did better than last year, as we clinched the team award, and two of the handicap prizes. A notable ride was done by Jack Ibbottson, who only the previous evening rode the Rutland 2up 25’ with Rob Newman in a time of 55min, and he’s only a junior!. High expectations for the future. Many thanks go to all the marshalls who helped to guide the riders through all the turns needed for this course.

Now arriving at gate 15………

This newsletter we have a new arrival to announce. Peter and Karen Hurst are now the proud parents of a bouncing baby boy, Joshua. Born on 24th September, he weighed 8lb. The Doncaster Wheelers passes on all its best wishes to you all.
