Welcome to Issue 20.

As the sun slowly ebbs away…

Well the summer is almost gone, This newsletter starts of with a few congratulations, and best whishes.

Best wishes go out to El President, Bob Waddington for his continued recovery from his medical problems of the spring/summer. He is well on the road to recovery, as his steady marshals finger was seen pointing the way, to may a rider at the recent NMCF 100’, on what was not one of summers best days.

Speaking of the NMCF 100’, congratulations go to Pete Hurst on his personal best in that event (4hr 24min), although at the last turn he was seen to be smiling, indicating he had a lot more left in his tank! Peter has excelled at al distances this year and continues to improve. This years milestones have been a 21min 10’, 57min 25’, 1:2:0 50 and that 4hr 24min 100’.

Congratulations also go out to Jack Ibbotson on his 3rd place in this regions GHS 10’ final with a 25:16. There’s talent for the future.

Our very own comeback king, Martin Maltby deserves a mention, with a second place  (57:39) in the Rutland 25’. Martin has been progressing steadily all season, and hopefully come to a pinnacle at our own 25’.

 A Personal Thanks…

I would just like to use this part of the newsletter to say a public, big thank you to John Beaumont, for his assistance, when I came off the track at Scunthorpe, and broke my collar bone and shoulder blade. John luckily for myself had come down to spectate with Martin and Jack Ibbottson. John very kindly took care of my bike and car, sat around with me for hours at the hospital and drove me home, in the early hours of the morning. John, I will be forever in your debt, Thanks.

Well I have now recovered from the breaks, and back riding again at the track. Some people just never learn……….

 Sporting Course Event

A relatively new event to our list of promotions was the sporting course event based at Beckingham. A two lap event for the seniors and one lap for juniors and women, it was keenly contested, and well received by all. The weather was not too kind to us with cloud and eventual rain but everything went to plan. Many thanks go out to all who entered and all those who gave their time to help marshal, time and help in any way to the running of the event. The upshot of this is that next year it will form part of the national time trial series and as such we will have to make a big effort to run a successful and efficient event. Our boys did us proud on the day with a team win for the Wheelers. The result was as follows:

The Summer 10’ Series

A series that gets more popular each year, and its all down to just three people, Trevor Siddons for organisation and timekeeping, Bob Waddington & Bud Kendall for marshalling duties at the turn. A big thank you goes to these people. A total of 18 events were run with a total of 209 entries. Entries per event average at about nine, but on the last event of the series a total of twenty faced the timekeeper. The fastest ride of the year was done by Michael Hope 21:55, and an overall club winner, decided on an average mph over the fastest 5 events ridden was Bruce cooper with an average speed of 25.58mph. Well done Bruce. He narrowly defeated Martin Maltby (25.37mph), and Colin Hinds (24:44). Full results listing are available on the Club Web site www.donwhs.plus.com.

 New Members

Welcome to new members, Clive Johnson, Martin Wheeldon, Pete Farnell, Andrew Neilson, David Hartley, Jack Ibbotson and a welcome return to Alan Wardman. Many of you may remember Alan from the early 80’s, a then keen road, grass track and cyclo cross rider. Our current paid up membership stands at 80. But believe it or not we still have some members who have not paid their subs yet for this year. Is it you?

 Club Room

The Club Room makes its appearance again on the first Tuesday evening of the month starting Tuesday October 2nd. Come along for a chat gossip or just to pay your dues in the New Year.

You will be very welcome on Tuesday 6th November 2001, as it will be our AGM meeting. You chance to select the people to represent you, and to air your views etc. As I say time and time again, it’s your Club, make the effort to have your say.

To be a Lemon or not to be a Lemon, that is the question………

Disturbing news came my way recently, that cyclists are no longer welcome at the Lemon Tree Garden Centre, Epworth. Notices are apparently in evidence, stating that cyclist are not to be served in the café. Details of why exactly this situation has occurred, has yet to surface fully, but be warned. Don’t make it an emergency stop on your cold winter runs. You may be disappointed. A sorry state of affairs when a cyclist, a king of the road, is not welcome at a drinking hole.

 Road Race Report

The road race was once again run of as a success, many thanks to Martin Maltby, and all who helped out. A hard fought race was won by John Tanner, fresh from his 60-mile training ride with Scott Gamble second. With our own Chris Green, and Peter Hinchliffe involved in the action throughout the race. Our time trial specialist Peter Hurst started but had to retire due to a puncture.

 Attention all Youth’s!

Martin Maltby is arranging a trip at Don Valley Cycles, for the weekend of 20/21st October 2001, to Edwinstow Youth Hostel. It will be a possible off road trek there and back with your mountain bike. Many thanks to all who entered and helped support this event. Many favourable comments were passed after the event as to the choice of course, organisation and headquarters. A lot of thanks must go to chief organiser Trevor Siddons, without who this event would simply not have taken place. Good to see the Wheelers taking some of the prizes, but we missed out on the team prize once again. Maybe next year.

 Note:

As from now I am at college and as such things such as news letters, membership cards etc, may sometimes get a little sparse or delayed, due to college work, so please bear with me for the next three years, unless, anyone wants to take on the role in my place, full training provided. If you are interested, then please make yourself known at the AGM in November, when Club positions are filled.
