Welcome to Issue 19.

Following on from the last newsletter, 17 members of the Wheelers took up the offer to try out the Manchester Velodrome.  Members from all are groups were present, from 12 year old Alex Roelich to veteran George Miles. The evening went very well, with a coach takeing all through their paces, and in no time all were happy riding the bankings. Two hours went by quickly, and the overall feeling was that it should be repeated again in the future. Hopefuly some will carry their enthusiasm through, and ride the track again. We may have an Olympic Sprint or Pursuit team yet……..

Beaumont’s Big One……….

For those who have not yet heard via the grapevine, our ex Track supremo, John Beaumont, was knocked from his bike, near Tickhill, in March. He sustained a broken ankle, and various cuts and bruises.  The accident occurred due to the driver of a following car having a stroke\heart attack and John was unfortunately in front. Luckily people stopped and having made it onto a radio report, he was taken to hospital. John is now making a good recovery, and we wish him all the best. However the driver of the car was not so lucky, and unfortunately died later as a result of the incident.

Evening 10   Series…

The warm weather has returned and so has our 10 mile time trial series, on Tuesday evenings, 7.00pm, at Ancient Lane, Hatfield Woodhouse, so come along and help support it. Why not have a go? Remember its all for fun! If you don’t feel like riding help is always required to either marshal at the turn or help out with timekeeping. If you are interested in timekeeping for some of the events, see Trevor Siddons who will be most willing to show you how to do it. Help is always graefuly received.

Your support is required…..

Our road race on the Pickburn circuit is fast approaching, (Wed. 13th June). Helpers are required for the event, and if you can help out in any way, usually marshalling the corners etc, please let Martin at Don Valley Cycles know you are available.

The same goes for our Sporting course event based at Beckingham an Sun 10th June. If you are not intending to ride the event as a competitor, please let Trevor Siddons know if you will be available for marshalling duties etc.

These are club promotions, and as such, require your help to promote. Remember, that if you are reading this, you have more than likely paid your subs for the year, and so that means you are a current member. We don’t ask for a lot back, just a little help from time to time.

Open Event’s…..a little moan…….

If you want to timetrial or road race, please note that you are required to enter the event on an official entry sheet, at least 14 days before the event date. If you want to know what events are on, or have any other questions, just ASK! We have had a few moans in the recent past by riders, saying “I did’nt know what to do” or “nobody told be what events were on”.  All you need to do is get a handbook, ar just ask and someone will point you in the right direction. Remember you voted people into positions to supply you this information. For Road Racing its Martin Maltby, at Don Valley Cycles, and for Time Trialing its Trevor Siddons also at Don Valley Cycles.

Pooled Clubs 25’

A dissapointing entry for the 25’ this year. I had hoped we would build on past increasing numbers, seeing as the membership had increased, but we ended up with just 4 on the start sheet and 3 eventually rode. Remember this was the Club Championship event. It was a hard day, with a cold and persistant wind reflecting on the times. The result was as follows:

            1st             Peter Hurst               59:24

            2nd             Dale Coan               1:05:32

            3rd             Trevor Siddons        1:09:52

Congratulations to Peter, he has a 57 minute 25’ and a 22minute 10 to his name so far this season, so its early but promising days, watch this space, as the saying goes. Only 4 other riders getting under the hour in the whole event. Just the same old names again, where are all you fast lads, who gallop along on the club runs and Saturday runs? Left all your speed on the road, why not give it a try and submit yourself to the true race of truth, a real mans event.

On the  road racing front, it seem that there is a little resurgence, in interest. At the recent Oliver Twist Circuit event at Notton, we had a few of the Wheelers riding and finishing. Our best finisher was Chris Green in 4th place, congratulations to all.

Ideas from You…….

As we now have some extra funds available for the club to use, its up to you as the club, to say how it is used. The track session was one application, but there has been some comments that this was not applicable to all members. Remember it’s a club run for and by its members, so if you think you have an idea that may require a little funding, that would benefit the club be it a dinner or event, then let the committee member who covers that particular area know about it. The track was just one suggestion, but there’s nothing to stop you suggesting others. Remember it’s up to you, its your club.

A Blast from the Past……

Following on from the last issue, with kind thanks to Bill Kenyon, we have another look at a someones glorious past…. This time its Ken Miles, the spotlight is on you. Remember this: Sunday 7th October 1951, Yorkshire Cycling Federation 25’

1st                    K. Miles             Doncaster Wheelers             59:11  (Event Record)

 Team Award      Doncaster Wheelers                   3:06:43

                        K. Miles                 59:11

                        D. Smith             1:03:42

                        F. Fouweather      1:03:50

It would be nice to see a result sheet like that again, 50 years on….A belated well done Ken, and fellow members.
